Skype cannot load on Ubuntu 10.04

May 28th, 2011

My skype cannot load or start after the latest updates yesterday, and I was struggling with many suggestion online, as I was very desperate to get it up and running again.

Messing around with some library and files permission.

But at the end, just a simple solution suggested online, that removing the 2 files in ~/.Skype and restart Skype do the tricks !!

Before removing, backup first as I do not provide any warranty :)

Go to the hidden folder in terminal :

#cd ~/.Skype
#sudo rm shared.lck
#sudo rm shared.xml

Then login again, as mine works as usual after this fix.

Hope this help out someone who might face the same problems !

Laptop ? EEEpc, Netbook or MAC book !!

July 30th, 2008

Recently have been thinking of getting a new laptop for myself as the screen occasionally has problems, battery gettting flat pretty easily !!

But after going into details to look for which one better suit my needs, I only came to realize that there simply are just too many choices, that I myself are confuse now !!

The deeper I dig, the more I get confuse !

I mainly wanted one with great portability with long battery life.

But I occasionally need the CD/DVD burner.

However, I just realize that I actually seldom burn disc on the go.

Therefore, a netbook is also suitable for me.

And accidentally, I came across that someone has actually successfully installing MAC OS on many platform and different model of laptop, that get me even more excitely………..but more confuse also :)

I do not agree nor encourage pirating, but the video below with a MSI Wind netbook is very interesting indeed !!

So……………which one should I buy :)

MBR of my HARD DISK

May 9th, 2008

I was struggling recently in wiping and restoring my MBR on my 2.5″ HDD, as I previously have LINUX install and many other OS that I have tested before.

Then finally I screw up, and was not able to use the HDD for quite some time.

But today have the time, and I take out the DISK for further torturing :)

Finally I found MBRWiz, a free tool that is offer by the generous author here : http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/asm/mbr/BootToolsRefs.htm

MBRWiz

I hope someone who are facing the same problems would find this little piece of DOS software useful as well.

LAN DISK and usage in NETWORKING.

May 8th, 2008

I am not sure if LAN DISK is getting popular or not, but to me, it’s really one of a good device to have at HOME or in the OFFICE like the follow !

lan disk1

It looks quite messy though, cos I am very lazy to re-organise the cable….cos too many of them !!

Anyway, I use it as FTP and SAMBA mainly, keep most of my big files and backup for those important documents.

Backup, backup and backup is one of the hard lessons that I have learned previously, so I hope this will avoid me going through the same lesson again :(

On the other hand, with some software like VLC, foobar and many other that support media streaming, I could also play music or video through the network, and you can stream it anywhere, as you as you could connect to the router either by LAN cable or wirelessly.

This is especially useful if you have a lot of APE or CUE music files that is expanding continously !

Couple with LARGE and CHEAP LCD TV today, setting up a network home media center seems getting very simple now !

If control with a wireless keyboard with TV/DVD remote function, that would be great then :)

Are we improving as a whole …….Malaysia ??

May 5th, 2008

Was reading someone’s blog about young student having to borrow money, due to over spending.

But as general, many working people who runs a family, are also very tight financially.

As a country as a whole, comparing our surrounding neighboring country, like Singapore, Hong Kong or even Japan, how far are we from them ??

With inflation getting so serious now a days, are we able to earn enough to feed our family ??

Basically from my observation, people is Hong Kong generally are able to earn around HK$10,000 or more for fresh graduate.

Transportation, meals and other misc. expenses could cost around HK$100.

Therefore, after minus his basic expenses, one would still have around HK$7000 spending power !!

In Japan, though it looks like a very expensive city to live in, but if one is more careful about his/her spending, a simple meal could just cost you 500YEN, which is around RM15 per meal !

But imagine how much they could earn in a day !!

Thus is our economy healthy ?? I really wonder !!

It looks like everybody works very hard everyday, but a lot of us still struggle to meet ends :(

High Capacity Memory card

May 2nd, 2008

Capacity for memory card is getting higher and higher, but price is getting lower and lower !!  Which is good for us as a consumer.

The most recent 8GB SDHC card (class 6) – A-Data with life time warranty, which I bought, only cost me around USD20/pc.

Thus, isn’t that would be wonderful that we could pack lots of content and entertainment in such a small card to bring with us everywhere we go :)

However, one thing that worries me, is that I might lost it as it’s just s small little card only !!
